Scientists - Frantic Romantic (1979)

The Scientists are an influential post-punk band from Perth, Australia, led by Kim Salmon, initially known as Exterminators and then Invaders.

The Invaders became The Scientists in May 1978, when James Baker from The Victims replaced John Rowlings. Sujdovic left the band in August 1978. The songwriting partnership that ensued, with Baker writing lyrics which Salmon would put to music, naturally favoured a melodic pop infused style of punk.

The band started playing again in January 1979 with Dennis Byrne on bass. This lineup recorded the band's first single, "Frantic Romantic"/"Shake (Together Tonight)", released in June 1979 on the DNA label.

Radalj and Byrne left in April 1979, to be replaced by Ben Juniper (guitar) and Ian Sharples (bass). This lineup recorded the band's second release, The Scientists EP (released February 1980) and did two tours of Melbourne and Sydney, in December 1979 and February/March 1980. In Melbourne, the band appeared on pop TV show Countdown, performing "Last Night" from the EP.

Juniper left the band in May 1980 and Salmon, Baker and Sharples continued as a three-piece. The band broke up in January 1981 after recording their album, The Scientists (commonly referred to as The Pink Album), released in August 1981. In Sydney, Baker had joined Radalj to form Le Hoodoo Gurus with Dave Faulkner (ex-The Victims) and Kimble Rendall in January 1981.

Salmon then formed Louie Louie with Kim Williams (bass) and Brett Rixon (drums), though this band broke up in August 1981.

Legionaire's Disease Band - Dogtown (7'' 1979)

First time that I heard of this band was around the mid 80's. LDB was one of the earlier bands in the Houston area who discovered punk as a way to spread their thought about society and so it was Jerry Anomie who started the band due to lack of punkbands in Houston in 1978. Anomie had been released from Prison where he was for the possesion of MARIHUANA !!! After visiting a gig by the Dead Boys and Iggy Pop, he knew what his future would be.... a musician in a punkband ! Anomie formed a band together with David Tolbert and Gwen Duke on guitars, Norm Cooper om bass and Craig Haynes on drums. It was a surprise to see how vocalist Anomie would appear on stage. Sometimes he wore a 3 piece suit, other times he stood behind the mike naked. Most of those gigs in the early days turned out into big fight and the band being kicked out og the venue. LDB played everywhere. Gay Bars, Lesbian Bars, they even played one time at a biker bar. LDB inspired many other youngsters to start their own band. We might say that LDB was a pioneering band in those days.

Here is their first 7" from 1979.

A: Dogtown

B: I'd Rather See You Dead (Than With Wool On Your Head)

Husker Du - 1979 Northern Lights - demo

01. Picture of you
02. Can't see you anymore
03. The truth hurts
04. Do you remember
05. Sore eyes

Studio demo.

These tracks, which also appear on

the collection circulated as "Savage Young Du,"
were recorded by Colin Mansfield, who was kind
enough to provide the following background info:

"I was involved in recording most (probably all --
it's a long time ago) of the recordings made in
the basement of Northern lights. Both Greg and I
were working there (Greg in the record/head shop,
and I was setting up Twin Cities Imports in the basement). My band at the time, Fine Art, had already released an LP and was getting some radio play, and the boys (well, Greg and Grant, I think Bob was satisfied with their choice) asked me if I would record and produce some demos for them. (I owned a 4-track reel-to-reel, a mixer and mics and was more than happy to help out some friends). Anyway, the sets [on the 'Northern Lights' and 'Colin Mansfield' demos] are pretty much the same thing and while it may be of interest to collectors to separate them out, I did record more than the three tunes."
