S.O.A - No Policy EP (1981)

State Of Alert

When The Extorts broke up, their singer, Lyle Preslar, started playing guitar with Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson in what would become Minor Threat, and the other three Extorts joined up with Henry Garfield (Rollins) to form State of Alert (SOA).

The two bands debuted together in Washington, DC at a house party opening for The Untouchables, Black Market Baby, and the Bad Brains in December of 1980.

SOA brought a new level of aggression to the music, and it reflected well the mood of many of the kids in the young DC punk scene.
In the early part of 1981, the bands and kids were being kicked out of clubs, and the attempts to play shows in other spaces were often ended by a
visit from the police.

SOA and Minor Threat had a bit of a rivalry going, not only because there were ex-bandmates, but because Henry and Ian had been best friends for years. When The Teen Idles' record came out it was decided that any money that came back in would be used to put out another DC band's record.

SOA was not interested in waiting, however, so Henry put up his own money to put out the 10-song "No Policy" 7". In June of 1981, SOA played their last show, opening for Black Flag in Philadelphia at a show that ended in a riot. A few days later Henry got on a bus to meet up with Black Flag again, but this time it was to join the band.

Flys - The Flys EP [1978]

They had been around since the mid seventies in the guise of Midnight Circus but with the times a changing however, they wisely changed their name to the more punkish' The Flys'. Ironically they were signed by EMI who had rejected them as Midnight Circus!

As opposed to the more traditional 1234 buzzsaw style of punk The Flys come at it from a different angle while still retaining the sense of urgency. Sounding like the Cure or vice versa on the brilliantly entitled single Love & Molotov Cocktail / Can I Crash Here / Civilization (1978 EMI). Try also Waikiki Beach Refugees / We Don't Mind The Rave (1978 EMI). By then not a trace of punk as we know it Jim but catchy. In fact listen to it closely and hell, they could have flogged it to Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers! For what its worth Neil O'Connor was Hazel O'Connor's brother. Wow!

A steady release of singles and an album saw them veer towards a Mod-ish look & sound. But with increasingly diminishing returns 1980 saw them call it a day.

Here is an EP from 1978.

Flys - Love And A Molotov Coctail (7'' 1978)

Love And A Molotov Coctail

Two fingers poking at the world
One golden rule, no rules at all
Two fingers been poised down on to you
You better make sure they got something to do
Two fingers now what a surprise
Mama can't believe what happens before her eyes
Her little darling once so small
Never could believe you'd grow up at all

Well do we miss you, Yes we do
Father sends his regards to you
Will I write well once in while
I'll send my love and a Molotov cocktail...

Overkill - Overkill EP (1982)

This is my favourite single on the SST label.

Overkill was formed in late 1980 by drummer Kurt Markham and bassist Ron Cordy. Kurt, the group's main songwriter, was originally the guitarist but moved to drums in an attempt to lure friend Felice LoCoco, a guitarist, to join the group. Felice, a metal fan, wasn't interested in joining a punk band, though, and instead Jeff Dimick was added on guitar. The group played their first gigs with a singer named Joe, and their mix of hardcore and pre-thrash metal caught the attention of Black Flag and SST Records. SST wanted to put an Overkill record out but the band was tired of Joe, so they dumped him. At the suggestion of Greg Ginn, Overkill added Merrill Ward, a close associate of Black Flag and a sometime member of SST "super" group the Nig-Heist.

In late 1981, Overkill recorded their first EP with Spot, after which Jeff had left the group. Upon hearing the songs from the EP, Felice LoCoco had changed his mind about playing in a punk band an joined the group. The EP, titled Hell's Getting Hotter, was released in mid-1982. The group had also started recording their first LP that year. The new recordings reflected the group's move from the all out metal-tinged hardcore of the first EP towards a more hardcore-influenced hard rock. Ego problems had also begun to cause tension between Merrill and the rest of Overkill and he was given the boot in the spring of 1982. Intervention by Greg Ginn and Chuck Dukowski on behalf of Merrill had no effect.

The firing of Merrill Ward, along with the band's decision to pursue heavy metal cost them much of their punk audience. Merrill's replacement, called Scott Kidd, did little to help the situation with his inability to write decent lyrics and his onstage cock-rock posturing. Thrash metal was also on the rise but Kurt Markham, who wrote much of the music, refused to follow that route, causing more tension within the band. In 1983, Ron Cordy quit to play bass in metal act Bitch and Overkill officially came to an end. SST released Overkill's LP, Triumph of the Will, with vocals by Merrill, posthumously in 1985.

Overkill's short lifespan and early transition into hard rock left them to be one SST's more overlooked early bands, but they still have one footnote in hard rock/heavy metal history. In late '82, Overkill played a gig in San Fransisco with Bay-area metal act Trauma. The gig is famous because it was where Metallica's James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich got their first glimpse of Trauma bassist Cliff Burton, who they then recruited to join their band. Members of Overkill claim that Lars Ulrich visited them backstage after their set and congradulated them on being one of the few bands following the same route as Metallica.

Overkill's name has also been a source of confusion for metal fans for a number of years. In the early '80's, another Overkill formed in NY. This Overkill, a thrash metal band who released their first record in 1984 and still continue to this day, ended up copyrighting the band name. Some fans of NY's Overkill were disappointed upon their purchase of Triumph of the Will, thinking they'd discovered some long-lost album by their thrash metal heros (despite the LA band's line-up listed on the back cover) only to discover an entirely different band. SST retitled CD copies of Triumph of the Will to read "Overkill L.A." in the '90s to end the confusion.

Despite the fact that they seem largely forgotten, the members of Overkill have talked about reuniting several times, although nothing has ever panned out. Merrill Ward finished out the '80's singing for Chuck Dukowski's post-Black Flag act SWA before embarking on an acting career. Ron Cordy also carried on in Bitch for the rest of the decade, although big-time success alluded that band. Kurt Markham was the original drummer for Dez Cadena's post-Black Flag act D.C.3, although he dropped out early on.

A2 - our war.
B1 - burn the school
B2 - don't wanna be told

Genocide Superstars - Another Fucking EP (1997)

Genocide Superstars was a Swedish hardcore punk band.
The band was formed in 1994 in Örebro, Sweden.
The lyrics, themes and surrounding artwork tend to revolve around macho subjects such as violence, totalitarianism, alcohol use, women and motorcycles, in a very post-modern, almost sarcastic way. Despite the name, the band had nothing to do with national socialism, and did never approve of such opinions.

Guitarist & vocalist Mieszko Talarczyk was one of the victims of the 2004 tsunami, and the band announced on their Myspace page page that they had disbanded, as had Talarczyk's other band, Nasum. There is to date no plans whatsoever for the rest of the band to play and record together again, at least not under the name Genocide SS.

GG Allin - Live Fast Die Fast (1984)

You can say of the man what you want but he kept
his word, tho not everything happened the way he wanted it. GG once promised that he would commit suicideon stage by using dynamite and taking some of his
fans with him. Allin died of an accidental heroin overdose in New York City on June 28, 1993, in the Manhattan apartment of John Handley Hurt and Dwanna Yount

In his last show the power went out during the second song, after which he trashed the venue and walked the streets of New York naked and covered in blood and feces, surrounded by fans whom he openly embraced.

Here is his premonitial EP from 1984 "Live Fast Die Fast". I dunno if he died fast but he sure lived like that.
And the man got buried with his microphone and a bottle of Jack...
