This band is special to me as they are very good friends of mine from way back in the early 90's. Marc and Ronnie were already active in bands such as N.O.I.S. (No One Is Safe) and Necrology. If I had to label this album it's Psychedelic Powerpop that coms to mind. If you like powerpop you must have this !!!

Various- Punk Live In De Brouwershoeck (1981)

This is another weird compilation on Universe Productions.
Side A features live recordings made in de Brouwershoeck Pub in Leeuwarden, while side 2 features 2 tracks by Captain Sensible and a few by The Outtakes. While side B offers nothing special, not to say it really sucks, but the A-side is a true ripper. Iy starts with The Chops, a punk group from Groningen featuring Piepke, the later Boegies frontman. Second band is also rarely recorded. The first line up of Murder Inc featuring some girl named Baukje on vocals (if I remember right). Malicious Damage was one of the earliest punk bands in Friesland together with Spoiled Sperm. Spoiled Sperm came from Buitenpost and was the only skinhead band in Friesland around that time. Vocalist was Klaas Land brother of Foppe who was in the later legendary Strawelte. Can't tell you anything about The T-Shirts. Next are The Pin Baskets which was a band featuring Menno Bakker, who would later be the frontman in Kobus Gaat Naar Appelscha and a guy that would become a deejay and later even een newsreader on local TV: Eric Ennema. About Mortal Remains I cannot tell you more than that they also made it to another compilation album in 1984 entitled "Weleens Van Gehoord".

This was the fore last release by M.O.G. They'd only appear on a 10" entitled "I Let You In If The House Was n Fire" also available on this blog.

M.O.G. - Crap Rap (1988)

Well, as we are busy sharing hard to find records... this is one to get. M.O.G. (Muziekvereniging Ons Genoegen) was a legendary hardcore band from Leeuwarden. Their debut 7" the Radio Rock EP is known on the internet but you never see their second 7" or the LP on a blog. The album will follow later but here is the Crap Rap 7".

Disgrace - Yo Satan (1989)

Another hidden treasure on the world wide web. I really don't understand why really no one on this bloody planet ever posted anything by this great Straight Edge band from Leeuwarden. OK back in 1987 my old band Callosity once played as opener for them at the Skule in Franeker and we blew them of the stage but heck, it's a great band that deserves to be listened to by anyone who likes old HC punk. Guitarist Rene would later form the legendary band Cooper in Amsterdam. But thanks to my pal PHROSTBITE you can now enjoy the sounds of the "Yo Satan" EP. A true gem from 1989.

Various - The Saw Is Family (1991)

Back in the early 90's I used to make a magazine called Freak Out. It featured topics on music, movies, weird news clippings and serial killers. A nice rendition I would say. Since those days I didn't keep all the issues I released and so I was pleasantly surprised when I put my hands on a copy of the first compilation tape I released.
This tape belongs to former Sexual OCD drummer Roelof van der Hoek, the band I used to sing in 'till 1993. Besides Sexual OCD there are a bunch of great bands from Leeuwarden and 1 from Meppel. Grey Landscape was in those days the new band of the vocalist of Zmiv.

Almost all tracks on this tape were exclusively released on this tape alone.
The title from this tape was inspired on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. The Intro on this tape is a 3 minutes long piece from that movie (what had I been smokin those days huh?) and it has an outro with a small piece from a broadcast from The Evangelic Broadcast Company from the Netherlands aka E.O. on evil messages hidden in music.

Pugh's Place - Live (1972)

Pugh's Place - Pt. 3

In 1972 Wobbe van Seijen releases the album "Live".
It features recordings made in Leeuwarden, Pow Wow, Amsterdam, Paradiso and in Rotterdam, Exit.
Inbetween the tracks there is fake audience mixed. Nevertheless it's a great album and very rare these days.When the album is pressed the record sleeve isn't ready. Universe Records provides people with a test sleeve which they can trade against the original cover as soon as it's available. Imagine having a copy with both the original and the substitute sleeve!!!!After the band disbanded Nanne Kalma played in a band called Farmer's Union and Hans Kerkhoven and George Snijder went to a band called Ramses. Jan van der Heide became a dentist! In 1975 Kalma and Kerkhoven teamed up in the folkrock group Irolt. For the past few years Kerkhoven played in the band Kalis and Om 'e Noard.

Pugh's Place - Pt. 2....In 1970 Pugh's Place decides to release a 7"

"Nothing is real in here" backed with "The horoscope". On the picture sleeve drummer George Snijder

was wearing a wig because he was in the
army and had to cut his hair short. The band toured the Netherlands during 1970 an 1971.
When two band members left the for studies, it was the end of Pugh's Place.

Pugh's Place - West One (1969)

Pugh's place is a progressive rock group formed in Leeuwarden, Fryslan, the Netherlands. Hans Kerkhoven played in a local band called Example in 1965. This band turned end 1966 into Pugh's Place.
The band is formed by

Hans Kerkhoven: Lead guitar, 12 string guitar, acoustic guitar
Jan Ottevanger: Bass guitar
Nanne Kalma: Vocals, vibes, acoustic guitar
Jan van der Heide: Guitar, flute, vocals
George Snijder: Drums
Henk Kooistra: Organ

In the beginning they played covers by Steve Winwood, The Stones, The Yardbirds and The Kinks. But soon they started to write their own material and the music style changed to progressive rock.A debut album is released in 1969, which is called West One. Side A:

Interview David Vincent - Leeuwarden, Het Anker 1993 - Freak Out magazine

I remember this day as if it was yesterday. It was at the Eewal in Leeuwarden. Hotel Het Anker, 2 0'Clock in the afternoon. I was going to have an interview with one of my heroes of those days... David Vincent of Morbid Angel. I had taken two bootleg cd's with that I got from Bram of De Melomaan recordstore. I never gave them to him and when you listen to the interview you know why....
After the interview I invited the men to come to the oldest coffeeshop in town, Utopia. We had some good smokes and Morbid Angel swapped CD's with Joris from Dust Devil, who opened the festival the next day........
Oh yes, I did the interview for my very own FREAK OUT magazine but i havent got a copy of the issue with the interview anymore...
