State Of Alert

When The Extorts broke up, their singer, Lyle Preslar, started playing guitar with Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson in what would become Minor Threat, and the other three Extorts joined up with Henry Garfield (Rollins) to form State of Alert (SOA).

The two bands debuted together in Washington, DC at a house party opening for The Untouchables, Black Market Baby, and the Bad Brains in December of 1980.

SOA brought a new level of aggression to the music, and it reflected well the mood of many of the kids in the young DC punk scene. In the early part of 1981, the bands and kids were being kicked out of clubs, and the attempts to play shows in other spaces were often ended by a visit from the police.

SOA and Minor Threat had a bit of a rivalry going, not only because there were ex-bandmates, but because Henry and Ian had been best friends for years. When The Teen Idles' record came out it was decided that any money that came back in would be used to put out another DC band's record.

SOA was not interested in waiting, however, so Henry put up his own money to put out the 10-song "No Policy" 7". In June of 1981, SOA played their last show, opening for Black Flag in Philadelphia at a show that ended in a riot. A few days later Henry got on a bus to meet up with Black Flag again, but this time it was to join the band.

Lama - Nimetön (Johanna 1981)

Lama was one of the first punkbands in Finland. They split up in December '82, the farewell gig held at Lepakkoluola. Johanna records released LAMA's farewell 45 a half a year after they split up. That was followed by a 12" comp of their singles.

Various- Punk Live In De Brouwershoeck (1981)

This is another weird compilation on Universe Productions.
Side A features live recordings made in de Brouwershoeck Pub in Leeuwarden, while side 2 features 2 tracks by Captain Sensible and a few by The Outtakes. While side B offers nothing special, not to say it really sucks, but the A-side is a true ripper. Iy starts with The Chops, a punk group from Groningen featuring Piepke, the later Boegies frontman. Second band is also rarely recorded. The first line up of Murder Inc featuring some girl named Baukje on vocals (if I remember right). Malicious Damage was one of the earliest punk bands in Friesland together with Spoiled Sperm. Spoiled Sperm came from Buitenpost and was the only skinhead band in Friesland around that time. Vocalist was Klaas Land brother of Foppe who was in the later legendary Strawelte. Can't tell you anything about The T-Shirts. Next are The Pin Baskets which was a band featuring Menno Bakker, who would later be the frontman in Kobus Gaat Naar Appelscha and a guy that would become a deejay and later even een newsreader on local TV: Eric Ennema. About Mortal Remains I cannot tell you more than that they also made it to another compilation album in 1984 entitled "Weleens Van Gehoord".

The Longhorn Bar Was located at 14 South 5th St in Minneapolis. Sometime between July and November of 1980 it was renamed Zoogies.

Pretty decent audience tape. Channel balance changes abruptly a few times. After "MTC," Bob says "We'll be back," so it seems likely that the band, per custom, played two sets. "Statues" is reprised in the encore of second set (Grant: "You're forcing us to repeat ourselves."). Grant improvises lyrics to second "Statues" in response to people rushing the stage.

Vopo's

VOPO'S was formed in 1978.

Within 3 years of playing nearly every squat, youth-center, alternative/underground venue in Holland, some gigs in Germany, releasing a single and a full-length album, they were considered Holland's most (in-)famous punkband.

By 1982 VOPO'S were playing, alongside bands such as The Exploited, Anti-Nowhere League and the UK Subs, at all the main punkevents in the Netherlands.

With releasing their second album, on their own label Solid Records, in '83 (a somewhat different album, but still regarded a classic one in the history of Dutch punkmusic) things were gonna get even bigger. They planned a full scale tour taking them as far as the USA. But the whole thing never happened.

Though they sold several thousands of copies of their latest album and did some memorable shows, VOPO'S decided they'd had enough and quit...only to re-appear some 15 years later !
